Pittsburgh Cares- Ellen, Morgan, Kara, Diana

– Organizing community volunteers to help around the city. Their website was very clear on their purpose and what they do. There weren’t a lot of texts, but a lot visuals and concise writings. Some of the key phrases are “volunteer” “youth” “opportunities”.

– Calender; logo; volunteers experience pictures; links to media appearances and priority partners; images from their sponsors; E-newsletter; links to social media; contact information; about us page with visual component.

– Appeals to a wide audience. Wide range of people will find what they read interesting. They do not have a lot of useless texts. All the writing in the website was the most useful information. There were enough information for people who are truly interest and want to get more involved with the organization.

– They are active on Facebook, Twitter and Youtube. They thank people supporting their organization on Twitter, but on Facebook, they put more information for volunteering. They are less active on Youtube, there was only one video about the corporate volunteer council.

– Budgeting proposals; confidential information; business for other non-profit organizations this organization is working with. The public might not see all these effort they put in because a lot of people do not care that much, because the things they are not showing if those things are not going to change their decisions.

Do early birds really get the worms? Teaser

(This is just a sketch, I want to make more changes still)

I have always heard the saying, “early birds get the worms”, and this saying has been the ideology my parents and teachers in China followed for years. But as I grow older, I started to think waking up early is not the only way to get the worms in our lives.

Being in school in China, I had to wake up at 5 o’clock everyday to get to school and not be able to go home until 10 at night because I had to practice math problems after school. I worked so hard everyday and now that I look back at it, I wondered if all that effort I put in was worth it. I have to admit though, being in the Chinese education system helped me get really good at mathematics and memoizing theories and definitions I needed to get high scores on tests. But after I came to US, I do not think these are the things that will help me get through life more smoothly.

When I first came to the United States, I was shocked at how creative the students were. Teachers in the US give their students a lot of room to express what the students had in mind when it came to writing and creative arts. But I on the other hand, was lacking the creative side because I was so used to obeying the rules and do exactly what my teachers in China told me to do. I was jealous how the American students can create something unique and special on que. Here is the twist: American students usually do not wake up for school until 7 o’clock.

I saw this picture on TV when the Miss Dior first came out, and I really like this picture because I thought it's a perfect interpretation of the perfume, that it's light and chipper, all pink and girly~

Education differences

For my interview, I decided to interview two people, one is my friend, Zhiyi Fan, she is also Chinese who came to Pitt for college. and the other one is my high school teacher, he has been in the high school for 20 years and he has taught countless international students, so I wanted him to talk about his experience with Chinese students

I am still debating on whether I should use sound with my friend Zhiyi, I thought I was going to do an audio essay, but I wanted the project to look more polished, so I decided to go with a website, and maybe insert audio pieces in the website, but like I said, I am not sure yet.

My biggest question is about the layout of the web page, I have never done something like this before, so I am not sure how can I choose my diction to make the writing standout more. Also, i want to make this web site very casual and easy to read, so I need to figure out a way to make it more visually pleasing, I don’t know if what I have now is good? I tried playing with colors and fonts, hopefully I am going in the right direction.
